Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain
History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.
Characteristics of the grape: deep, dark, rich, strong tannins, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry Read more »

Carignan on Snooth

  • La Condamine Paulignan Minervois 2015

The opaque, deep cherry red wine exudes a perfume of Mediterranean brush (garigue), and spicy, peppery plum. The entry is slightly rustic with white pepper, black cherry, plum and leather predominating. This panoply of flavour lingers only on the back palate for a satisfying finish. Great value from southern France. 89. Read More

  • Chateau Carignan 2016

The 2016 Carignan is another triumph. Here is further proof that the literati of the wine world know much about hype, little about real quality. Why? Best look to the virtues and limitations of capitalism. Anyway, this fine Merlot-based wine has dagger-like oak elements (well integrated) on the palate that bespeak of further aging possibility... • The amount of product available from this vintage in the Gironde Basin is amazing and needs further (in depth) discussion.  I will await an inaugural entry by other members, but will add information by Sunday, October 13th if nothing is added.  In my lifetime, only the 2005, 2009 and 2010 merit any real comparison to this vintage. • Well, DV, the Bordeaux Release is the largest ever, I think, with something ... Belair Tradition (Fronsac), Carignan (Cotes de Bordeaux), Chantegrive (Graves), Fonreaud (Listrac), Floridene (Graves). These are just for starters.  There are, of course many more in the 40-100 dollar range which are still available and perhaps somewhat more worthy... • Ridge Geyserville 2013

Three years after my previous notes on this wine, I'm still liking it. As noted before, a light hit of red fruit--raspberry--but with no sweetness. Acid is apparent. As previously reported, tannin is somewhat sedate. I'm still calling this a medium-bodied wine, but contrary to my previous assessment, I am of the impression that more years of ... Read More

  • Ridge Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley 2015

I'm going to be a bit kinder to this wine than I was a year and a half ago. I am still getting bright red fruit--raspberry, plum, and I am still surprised at the relative lack of tannin. However, it has rounded out to a nice, mouth-filling wine. I am wondering if this is a stylistic change at the winery. Read More
