Napa County Wine

There is some debate over how this famous wine region got its name. Spanish settlers named the Native American tribe that originally inhabited the area “Wappo,” and some say this is a derivation of “guapo” meaning “handsome,” while others say it means “brave,” with Napa being a further spin-off. Another legend is that Napa is a Wappo word for the land itself. Regardless, with its Mediterranean climate and diverse terroirs, this land eventually became one of the most important wine regions in the world.

The first vineyards in Napa were planted in 1836 by George Calvert Yount in what is now the town of Yountville. In the 1850s, Thomas Rutherford, who married Yount’s granddaughter, Elizabeth Yount, established the first vineyard in what would become Rutherford town. The first commercial winery was established by Charles Krug in the 1860s. Soon, the likes of Inglenook, Beringer and Schramsberg and many others set up their wineries and Read more »

Napa County on Snooth

  • Robert Mondavi 'Oakville' Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

    Snoothrank:

More blue than red in the glass. Astringent nose of black berries. On the tongue I find as much red berry--raspberry--as black--blueberry (if I can call that that black). A considerable amount of tannic puckeriness-- I guess there's no surprise there--and quite a bit of acid tartness. I'm afraid this one needs much more sideways time in orde... Read More

  • Joseph Carr Napa Valley Merlot 2013

    Snoothrank:

Violet color in the glass Moderately fruity/floral nose. Quite fruity on the tip of the tongue--blueberry seems to lead. The initial taste is a bit frightening, but as the wine passes back some good things happen. There is some minerality and some surprising spiciness. Then, some heft. I am getting some, for Merlot, pretty good tannin. So... Read More

  • Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

Nose of dark fruit. Dark purple color. Blackberry, blueberry, currant on the tip of the tongue. Fairly "thick" mouthfeel. More "sweetness" than I normally get from CS. Some leather/tobacco under the mid-to-rear palate. Not as tannic as many Napa examples, but, still, a sturdy wine. Read More

  • Apsara Chardonnay Oakville 2016

    Snoothrank:

Pale yellow in color. Tropical fruit aroma. Tropical fruit--pineapple, guava, banana--on the tip of the tongue, then, some caramel. Observable oak, but not over the top. Some stoniness. Nice refreshing acid. Read More

  • Groth Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Napa Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Very nice wine. Dark fruitcurrants, blueberry, black plum. Some roughness mid-palate that would suggest coffee or tobacco, but, certainly, none of those flavors. Nice, side-of-the-tongue acid tartness. Firm tannin, but, again, nothing to discourage one from drinking now. Read More

  • Flora Springs Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Vanilla cream, blueberry preserves, chocolate cream, licorice and and some light spice on the nose. Creamy textured with a bit of a tart entry of cherry and cranberry fruit, young strawberry and a lightly green mid palate of floral notes and warm fruit with a slightly bitter, plummy finish. • William Hill Estate Winery Benchland Series Chardonnay Napa Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Pleasantly floral honey and honeysuckle aromas with green apple and white grape fruit notes. Bold, assertive and hot on the palate with powdered sugar spice, peach and green apple fruit with a finish of cream, butter and hot citrus thats a little bit sharp on the finish. Read More

  • Provenance Oakville To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet 2006

    Snoothrank:

Surprising, to me, dark fruit aromatics on the nose. Not as obvious on the tongue, but there is cassis, but less fruit and more things like unsweetened chocolate, tobacco, leather and dustiness. Some of those sensations may be coming from some still obvious tannin. This is a full-bodied wine that might be a great pairing with a hearty winter ... Read More
