Bordeaux Wine

Located around the Gironde estuary and along the Dordogne and Garonne rivers, Bordeaux is one of France’s most important wine-producing regions. The groundwork was laid when the Dutch drained the marshes of the Medoc in the 17th century. Then climate is maritime and as humid as it was when the land was covered in marshes instead of vineyards, leading to a variety of viticultural problems, such as rot and mildew.

Bordeaux can be divided into four major regions. The Medoc is the area west of the Gironde and downstream (north) of the city of Bordeaux. It includes the major communes (roughly north to south) of St-Estephe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, and Margaux. The “right bank” refers to the area east of the Dordogne. It includes the communes of St-Emilion and Pomerol. Graves comprises the area upstream (south) of the city of Bordeaux. The first growth Haut-Brion is located here. This area is also well-known for the sweet wines of Sauternes. Finally, the Entre-Deux-Mers is the area between Read more »

Mentor for Bordeaux Wines

Justin Christoph

I enjoy trying wines from around the world, but Bordeaux was my first love, now eclipsed by Riesling. I have worked in the wine business for 10 years, mostly auction, now importing/consulting.

  • Chateau Deyrem Valentin 2016

Deepest red in the glass. Nose of cedar wood, sweet cherry and currant. Clean and pure like the finest fruit. Slight edge to the tannin with a promise of long life in the bottle. Good red fruit with some licorice and cake spice mid-palate. More suave, fleshy and aromatic red fruit on the finish with a touch of cigar tobacco. Elegance and gr... Read More

  • Chateau Calon Segur St. Estephe France Bordeaux 2008

Sweet plum, cedar and cassis (blackberry) on the nose coming from a glass in which the wine presents as almost opaque red. Entry is smooth with swirls of cherry, cedar, fresh tobacco leaf and even dark roast coffee. This wine answers the bell with a smooth finish and diminished tannin. Perfect now. 92+ Read More

  • Chateau Carignan 2016

The 2016 Carignan is another triumph. Here is further proof that the literati of the wine world know much about hype, little about real quality. Why? Best look to the virtues and limitations of capitalism. Anyway, this fine Merlot-based wine has dagger-like oak elements (well integrated) on the palate that bespeak of further aging possibility... • I have been drinking Bordeaux wines since the 1978 vintage and had bought several highly rated 2009 and 2010 wines to hold. I decided to open several to see if they were worth holding.
